Chende is a famous historical and cultural city. It is situated in Hebei Province and has an area of 4,471 square kilometers and a population of 88.5 million.

Surrounded by mountains, Chengde lies on the area between the Mongolia Plateau and the Huabei Plain. It has a temperate continental climate with an annual average temperature of 8.8oC, and has 150 frost-free days. Annual rainfall averages 580 millimeters.

Mineral deposits of Chengde include coal, iron, copper, molybdenum, manganese, titanium, fluorite, and Iceland spar. The output of Iceland spar ranks the highest in China. Industries are machinery, electronics, meters, food processing, pharmaceuticals, tourism products, metal making, and construction materials. The chief farm products include corn, sorghum, millet, sesame, peanuts, and fruit.Rail and road transportation facilities of Chengde are good.

Chengde is an 18th century (Qing Dyansty) imperial resort area. The Imperial Summer Villa and the Eight Outer Temples are very famous scenic spots of China. The special locally-made products are silk products, glass ware, and tinned food.

Imperial Mountain Resort

Chengde Imperial Mountain Resort was constructed during the reigns Emperor Kangxi and Qianlong. It took 89 years to complete. The resort is the largest imperial palace still remained in China. There are about 120 ancient architectures in the Mountain Resort, such as pavilions, halls, verandahs and garrets. It has the undulating mountains, tranquil valleys, vast grassland, lovely bird and deers, and rippling lakes that fully represent the supreme craftsmanship of classical garden construction. The resort possesses rich value of history and culture, and the unique artistic value of garden building.

Yan Yu Lou (Misty Rain Tower)

It imitated the Misty Rain Tower of South Lake in Jiaxing. When it rains, the scenery of the resort in the mist is just beautiful.

Mongolian Yurts in the Garden of the Ten Thousand Trees.It used to be the place for Emperor Qianlong to entertain chiefs of minor nationalities and foreign envoys, which is rebuilt as the Mongolian Yurts Hotel now.

Outer eight temples

The Eight Outer Monasteries were built in groups on the mountain slopes on the east and north of the Mountain Resort. Their glistening gilt tiles and grandiose construction show a harmonic combination of the Han, Mongolian and Tibetan architectural style. There are Puning Temple, Putuo Zongsheng Temple, Pule Temple, Xumi Fushou Temple, etc. The Mountain Resort together with the majestic temples is the formation of a unified entity. It is the miniature of the glorious land of China.
