Guangzhou,
located at the north of the Pearl River delta, is an important
trading center as well as a busy port and the capital city of
the province of Guandong. The city has an area of over 16,000
square kilometers and a population of 6.7 million.
The climate of Guangzhou is sub-tropical. The average year-round
temperature is 22C. August is the hottest month, with an average
temperature of 28C. January is the coldest month, with an average
of 13C. The rainy season falls between April and August. Average
annual rainfall is 1,720 mm.
Like Athens of Greece and Rome of Italy, Guangzhou also has
a history of more than 2,800 years.
Guangzhou is also one of the most important centers of foreign
commerce in South China. The Chinese Export Commodities Fair
has been held twice a year in the city since 1957. It is also
a cultural center.
Guangzhou is a beautiful city with an ever-green scenery and
flowers blooming all the year round. The city boasts many tourist
attractions, among which highlights are White Cloud Hill Scenic
Spot. Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou Zoo, Six Banyan Temple and Flowery
Pagoda, Dr. Sun Yatsen Memorial Hall.
Guangzhou ranks first in the number of restaurants and tea-houses
in the country. Cantonese cuisine is good in color, fragrance,
taste and presentation.
Mt.White Cloud
Mt.White Cloud consists of more than 30 peaks and covers an
area of 28 square kilometers and is a natural garden and a tourist
summer resort with development of over 1,000 years.
It includes six tour areas: Minzhulou, Moxingling, Santailing,
Mingchungu, Fei'eling and Luhu. Scenic spots include not only
the existing Moxingling, Baiyunxiaowang, Baiyunwanwang, No.1
Peak in the South, Baiyun Songtao, Hilly Guesthouse, Songtao
Courtyard, Pearl Pavilion, Luming Restaurant and Baiyun Celestial
Hall, but also newly-added scenic spots in recent ten years,
i.e. Baiyun Cableway, Mingchungu, Guangzhou Stele, Nengren Temple,
Golf Course, Xinghai garden, Yuntai Garden, Sculpture Park and
Baiyun Sliding Track, etc.
Yuexiu Park
Situated in the northern part of Guangzhou, the Yuexiu Park
or called Yuexiu Mountains are composed of seven hills and three
artificial lakes. Covering an area of 92,300 square meters,
its main peak has an altitude of 68 meters above the sea level.
It is famous for its picturesque scenery and numerous well-known
historic sites. The mountains boast a gorgeous environment,
with undulating hills, luxuriant trees, green water, singing
birds and fragrant flowers.
There are also many recreational facilities, including large
stadium, Yuexiu Natatorium, Jinyin Amusement Park, and Flower-and-plant
Hall etc. It is the biggest comprehensive park in Guangzhou.
The famous historic sites on it, such as the Sea-dominating
Tower, the Ancient City Wall, the Ancient Battery, the "Ancient
Chutin" archway, the "Restoration" Pavilion,
the Monument to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Zhongyuan Tower, the "Sailor"
Pavilion, and the Five-Rams Sculpture etc, and towers, terraces,
pavilions, balustrades, bridges, dot the green mountains and
blue water to create a harmony of artificial landscape and natural
landscape.
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is located within the Temple
of Azure Clouds (Biyunsi) at the foot of the eastern slopes
of Xiangshan (Fragrant Hill) park in the Western Hills.
A bust of Sun Yat-sen stands opposite the main entrance to the
hall. Immediately to its right is an empty coffin, covered in
bronze and lined with glass, which was a gift from the government
of the Soviet Union. Because it arrived two weeks after Sun
Yat-senĄŻ s remains had been entombed, this coffin was not used.
On the left side of the hall is a display of letters and manuscripts
left behind by Sun at his death. On the wall is a white marble
inscription of a letter Sun Yat-sen addressed to the Soviet
Union.
There are exhibition rooms on each side of the Memorial Hall.
The first displays photographs of Sun Yat-sen in his youth and
the second shows his activities during the period of democratic
revolution.
