Guilin is a historical and cultural
city as well as a tourist wonderland of world fame. It literally
means "cassia tree forest", named for the local cassia
trees, whose scent wafts through the city in autumn.
There are green hills and fields, forests
of peculiar pinnacles and the beautiful Li River winding through
the city. From Guilin to Yangshuo, the river travels 83 kilometers
with both shores decorated with "numerous green hills popped
up out of the ground," a poetic and picturesque environment
in which one cannot but feel relaxed and refreshed.
The history of Guilin dates back to
over 2,000 years ago.
With the help of the natural elements of wind and rain, Guilin
goes into a wonderland of weird shaped and isolated peaks and
bizarre and fantastic-looking caves amidst limpid waters and
nice fields.
Guilin is also a multi-national city
with a population of 1.25 million of 11 ethnic groups of the
Han, Zhuang, Miao, Yao, etc. The diversity in dresses and social
customs of different ethnic groups offers colorful folklife
and attracts large numbers of tourists from home and abroad.
Guilin is a clean city with charming
waterfront and ever-changing moods. Hills and parks mottle the
urban landscape. A few sights, like Elephant Trunk Hill, Wave-Subduing
(Fubo) Hill, and the port area, are illuminated at night. And
the many small restaurants offer particularly Li River cuisine,
such as fish, eel, frog, snail, shrimp and snake.
DieCai Hill
Located north of Guilin by the Li River,
Diecai Hill rises abruptly with an elevation of 73 meters. The
grotesque-looking rocks, with patterns suggesting a great pile
of folded brocade, gave the hill its present name Folded Brocade
Hill. Covering an area of 2 square kilometers, the hill consists
of Yuyue Hill, Siwang Hill (Look-on-All-Direction Hill), Crane
Peak and Bright Moon Peak.
Many charming scenes such as Diecai
Pavilion, Diecai Archway, Windy Cave and Cloud-catching Pavilion
scatter on the hill.
Elephant Trunk
The elephant hill, also called the elephant
trunk hill, lies on the conjunction of the li river and the
peach blossom river. It is the badge of guilin city.
The whole hill looks exactly like an
elephant drinking water by the li river. It is the masterpiece
of karst landscape, composed of pure limestone deposited on
seabed 360million years ago.
Li River Scenery
Li River is the highlight of your Guilin tour, as is one of
the highlight in China. The 54-kilometer Waterway on the twisty
Li River from Zhujiang to Yangshuo covers hundreds and thousands
of
grotesque
peaks.
Fubo Hill
Fubo Hill stands on the west bank of
the liriver in downtown guilin. The east part of the hill strecth
into the river, seems to hold back the turbulent waves, thus
it was named Fubo Hill. There are return pearl cave, sword testing
rock, big iron bell and huge cooking pot in Fubo Park.
Solitary Beauty Peak
It rises sheer from the ground inside
the palace in the center of the city. It has acquired a fame
of "the Pillar Holding up the Southern Sky" because
of its majesty. The climb to the top is steep but there are
good views of the town, the Li River and the surrounding hills.
On the eastern cliff there remains giant engraved characters
by the Qing dynasty calligraphers.
