Ancient Town

Lijiang is really two towns, two distinct parts divided by Lion Hill - the New Town, which came into being 43 years ago, and the Old Town, an 865-year-old architectural gem, although it looks like a huge inkstone, hence its name Dayan or Big Inkstone.

Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis and founder of the Mongol dynasty in China, came this way in 1253 on his conquest of Yunnan and established an administrative office which 23 years later became the Lijiang Military and Civil Protectorate . Thereafter the name " Lijiang " began to be used.

Dayan is the center of the Naxi people, the capital of the Lijiang Naxi Autonomous County, and a place of utter contentment, where birds chirp from their cages hanging from the eaves of the houses and gurgling branches wind their ways through the streets and lanes in every part of the Old Town.

With Sifang Street at the core, the entire city spreads out in all direction, and is crisscrossed by a labyrinth of flagged streets and alleyways. Most of the dwellings, scattered at the foot of a mountain or by the rivers which flow through every nook and corner of the city, are brick-and-tile structures with carved doors and painted windows. Traffic across the rivers is facilitated by a large number of tiny stone bridges.

Dongba Culture

It refers to the ancient Naxi culture, which is given the name passed down by "dongbas". Dongba Culture originated from the Primary Naxi Religion, and believes in the super natural gods and their rule over the world. It is polytheism and incorporates Lamaism, Buddhism and Daoism. Dongba shaman, which means "wise man", is a witch doctor, scholar, craftsman as well as an artist. Dongbas are disseminators of the Dongba Culture.
The Dongba scriptures are a series of more than 20,000 books written in Naxi pictographs with more than 2000 hieroglyphs, a form of writing invented by the Naxi people more than a thousand years ago. It is reputed as the encyclopedia of the ancient times of the Naxi Nationality. The "Dongba Scroll Painting" and the "Art of Dongba Painting" are invaluable treasures in the ethnic gallery.

Since the early 1960s, some 20,000 volumes of Dongba documents have been collected and preserved. So far, l,500 volumes have been translated by the Dongba Research Center in Dayan. An important source of history, language, social and religious customs of the Naxi people, and some of them have been published. And in recent years more and more domestic and foreign scholars have come to Dayan to do research work on Dongba culture.

Jade Snow Mountain

The Jade Snow mountain is situated some 15 km. north of Lijiang County. With thirteen peaks resembling jade pillars holding the sky, it stands majestically on the east side of the Jinshajiang River.
The mountain extends 35 km. from south to north. Owing to the widely different altitudes of the mountain parts, a climate of a three-dimensional nature is conspicuous and may be attributed to the modern oceanic glacial period. Cash timber, medicinal herbs and various flowers are distributed in accordance with different climates resulting from different altitudes. The mountain is a well-known habitat of azaleas and rhododendrons.
The Jade Snow Mountain owns the gorgeous "Twelve Scenes" such as the "Fog in March" and the "Cloud Belt in June". The main peak Shanzifeng (Mount Fan), and Xianjiyan, Wohuping, Luxuedongtian, Yunshanping, etc. are among the places opened up for sightseeing.

Lijiang, the land of music and dance, possesses various colourful folk customs. The eleven nationalities in the district, Naxi, Yi, Lisu, Pumi, Bai, Dai, Miao, Zhuang, Tibetan, Hui and Han, which are loaded with diverse flavors.

Tourists here are usually deeply impressed by the diversity of the minorities and their customs in such a limited area, which is a result of the crisscross-like geographical distribution of the eleven nationalities. Costume, marriage, etiquette and dance vary. When the ceremonious traditional "Mountain - circling Festival" approaches, Mosuo girls will be dressed up colourfully like fairy maidens from Heaven and beautiful butterflies flying about.

Murals

Lijiang's murals are works of the Ming Dynasty, chiefly created from the Hongwu to the Wanli eras. They were originally distributed among the Juexiansi Temple and twelve others, nine of which fell to ruins. The remaining four temples have altogether 55 murals, with a total area of 139.22 sq. m. The biggest of them is in Dabaoji Palace.

The figures depicted in it amount to 100, all disposed naturally and reasonably, with lifelike miens expressing a variety of postures and the whole gamut of emotions. The murals contained in the glazed chamber of the Dabaoji Palace are provincial cultural relics under enhanced preservation.
With the Jade Dragon Mountain's reflecting in the Black Dragon Pool, green willows stretching their soft branches and chestnut trees standing around, Moon-Embracing Pavilion (Deyuelou) beside the white marble Belt Bridge, and the Five-Phoenix Hall (Wufenglou) that seems to be alive and ready to soar into the sky, the park is really a nice place to take a delightful stroll.

Black Dragon Pool

Popularly known as Black Dragon Pool, the Yuquan (Jade Spring) Park at the foot of the Xiangshan Mountain north of the city of Lijiang derives its name from the pool, which is as sparkling as jade and as clear as spring water. The entire park, tucked away in the shades of swaying willow trees, is covered with green grass. Under the Shuocui Bridge a waterfall creates a constant roar as it cascades down the stream.

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Situated to the northwest of the town of Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge with a splendid view of the swift turbulent current of the Golden River is created through constant cutting by the waters between Jade Dragon Mountain and Haba Mountain. 17 kilometers long, the gorge drops about 300 meters in a series of 18 rapids, and is divided into the Upper Gorge, the Middle Gorge and the Lower Gorge. The Lower Gorge is the most awe - inspiring part of all. The gorge, in which the Golden Sand River pounds furiously at its rocky shores in an awesome fashion, sending up skyfuls of white froth, is a dream place for adventurers.

Lugu Lake

The Lugu Lake is set in a dense forest between the Ninglang Yi Autonomous County of Yunnan Province and Yanyuan County of Sichuan Province and 300 kilometres from Dayan Town of Liliang.

The environment around the lake is well preserved where the air is fresh, the water pollution-free, and the scenery incredibly delightful. The shore of the lake is home to the Musuo people, a branch of the ethnic Naxi group who retain the vestiges of a matriarchal society. The wedding custom of the Musuo people is noted for its exotic ceremonies.

First Bend of the Yangtze River

The First Bend of the Yangtze River is located on the north side of the highway leading from Dali to Lijiang, about 70 km. from lijiang Town. The upper reaches of the Yangtze River is named the Jinsha River, which originates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Jinsha River flowed southward along the Hengduan Mountain ranges and was forced to the turn to north because of the Alpine movements which caused changes in the earth's physiognomy. When the river reaches Shigu Township, it makes an abrupt turn and flows further northward, forming the rare V-shape bend.
