Urmqi
is situated on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains,
is most famous for being the furthest city in the world from
the ocean. A relatively new city (founded in 1763), the most
land-locked area in the world is essentially a modern and drab
place, resembling a Russian industrial town in many ways, with
few sights of interest but a lively resident population who
sustain enough intrigue to hold you here for a day or two. This
is also a compulsory stop in terms of transportation (and has
been since the Silk Road opened) throughout Xinjiang, and the
spectacular Heaven's lake, a day trip from the city, justifies
a visit to this area in itself.
Previously known as Dihua, meaning "Enlightening and
Civilizing", the Chinese renamed the city in 1884 to its
present day tag. Although the feeling and atmosphere here is
predominantly Uigurian, 80% of the population is Han Chinese.
Long an important trading center, the industrial and commercial
side of the city is dominated by the Han Chinese population
today, with huge department stores and factories ruling the
skyline here. An exploration of the old streets and the Uigur
area known as Erdaoqiao provides a more interesting look of
the different nationalities living in the city.
Tianchi Lake
Situated in the Heavenly Mountain range, 115 km (71 miles)
northeast of Urumqi, The Tianchi Lake is one of the main tourist
attractions in China. Formerly known as Yaochi (Jade Lake),
the lake is particularly refreshing for those arriving to Urumqi
from the barren deserts in Xinjiang, or from China's numerous
granite cities. It is hemmed in by the majestic snow-crowned
peaks west of Bogda Mountain and it is geologically a moraine
lake 3,400 meters (1,1125 feet) long, 1,500 meters (4920 feet)
wide, 1,980 meters (6494 feet) above sea level.
Covered with firs, pines, cypresses and white snow, it boasts
a spectacular sight- reminiscent of Switzerland or the Rocky
mountains but somehow with more vibrancy and color. Amidst fields
of wild flowers grow morel mushrooms, peppermint and rhubarb,
while higher up the mountain are edelweiss and the rare creamy
Snow Lotus (Saussurea involucrate), which grows from rock crevices
and is believed to have magical powers as a medicinal cure.
Red Hill
The Red Hill is a pleasant spot to visit to get your bearings
when you first arrive
in this modern city. The views from the top of the mountain
of the surrounding countryside and breathtaking mountains, make
the steep climb worthwhile.
It¡¯s peak stands 1391 meters above sea level. Climb up to
the top, where you can stop and sit down for a drink and enjoy
fabulous views over the city with the snow capped mountains
behind.
The Qing Pagoda can be found half way up the hill. This was
built by one of the emperors to ward off the evil dragon and
his spirits! There are also a few fairground rides within the
grounds here, and a lake to boat on. This is a popular spot
with local families who come here to get out of the city for
the day.
Southern Mosque
The Southern Mosque, which is located near the south gate
of Urumqi, got its name as "Southern Mosque". It is
an important mosque in Urumqi.
Embraced by four minarets, the vaulted mosque, grand and imposing,
expresses the elegant characters of Islamic architecture. The
main body of the mosque, taking the shape of a tower, consists
of four stories, two underground and two above. The storeies
underground are shops and living area of Moslems while the two
overground used as prayer hall and seminary. Two walls of the
passageway leading to the prayer hall are decorated with carved
orchids, plums, bamboo and lotuses. The compound also includes
a washing room for use before prayers.
